Labor Pains: Inside America's New Union Movement by Suzan Erem,

Labor Pains: Inside America's New Union Movement by Suzan Erem,
Labor Pains is an insider's account of the struggle to rebuild a vibrant and powerful trade union movement in the United States. It takes as its starting point the daily experience of a union organizer, and brings that experience to life. It enables us to grasp how the conflicting demands of race, class, and gender are lived in the new union movement. The role of the unions is defined mainly by larger economic and political agendas. While keeping these agendas clearly in sight, Erem focuses primarily on aspects of the life of the union which often remain hidden. The personal crises of union members become entangled in the work of the union. The energies of the union are focused not only on winning gains from bosses but also on maintaining internal cohesion and morale among workers. Barriers of race, age and gender are constantly negotiated and overcome, and conflicts flare up across them at moments of tension. And union life goes on not only when the workers have made their point, or won a victory, but after defeat as well. The personalities and ambitions of union organizers converge at times and become a source of tension at others. While never underestimating the obstacles in the way of the union movement, she makes a powerful and passionate case for organizing the disorganized and empowering the powerless.

Women and Globalization by Delia D. Aguilar,
Women and Globalization by Delia D. Aguilar,
Despite promises from economists, politicians, and conservative pundits in the West that the globalization of capitalism will eventually improve the economic welfare of all nations, in actuality the process has resulted so far in the enrichment of the few at the expense of the many. One decidedly negative trend is that globalization has created a new international labor class--a female proletariat consigned to the lowest-paid and least-secure jobs with the worst working conditions. From the maquiladoras in Mexico to assembly plants and export processing zones in Central America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Rim, to subcontractors and garment sweatshops in major cities and in nations on the periphery, it is women's labor that allows and guarantees maximum profitability for the corporate elite, a tiny minority of the world's inhabitants. This collection of revealing articles shows the reality of globalization as it is experienced by women workers at the bottom of society throughout the world. The contributors examine migrant domestic labor in the European Union, Malaysian women working in both industrial and service sectors, the relationship between domestic welfare reform in "First World" nations and structural adjustment as imposed on indebted nations of the "Third World, " the dramatically altered labor relations among men and women in Mexico as the result of NAFTA, labor conditions in Filipino sweatshops and for overseas contract workers (mainly women), the practice of female circumcision in the Sudan, the mail-order bride industry in Taiwan, the international trade in women as "sex workers, " and many other topics. An underlying theme shared by all the contributions is that currentpostmodern, postcolonial feminist theory has failed to recognize the key issues of class and economics at the heart of the worldwide exploitation of women.
